Top 5 Things To Keep In Your Car

So you're broken down on the side of the road. You don't remember how long it's been since you've seen a street light or the last service station. Your phone has reminded you twice now that you're running low on battery. Not the most ideal circumstances, huh?

Hopefully if you're reading this then the about situation is only hypothetical and not a reality. Whether it be through friends' horror stories or our own personal experiences, we all know that those are circumstances that we want to try our best to avoid. Unfortunately, sometimes such circumstances can and do arise, so here is a list of the top 5 items to keep in your car at all times to best avoid those crummy breakdown situations:

1. Flashlight- Only thing worse than being broken down on the side of the road is being broken down on the side of the road in the dark with no way to see what you're doing. Luckily most phones now come with flashlight technology, or at least light up bright enough to sorta see what you're doing. Which leads us to our next point; don't get caught without a...

2. Phone Charger- It's indisputable, we place so much trust in our phones. Whether it be for navigation or the only way to get a hold of your emergency contacts, you don't want to be caught in an emergency situation with a dead battery.

3. Spare Tire/Donut- Arguably one of the most common roadside problems, a flat tire should never set you back more than 15 minutes and a little bit of elbow grease. It will, however, if you don't have a spare tire on hand in your car. Double check that you do, and while you're at it, check that you have...

4. Jack/Tire Iron- That spare tire isn't going to do you any good if you do not have the proper tools to get the bum tire off and the new one on. Make sure you're always set for this circumstance; a flat tire is not a question of 'if' it's going to happen as much as it is a question of 'when'.

5. Jumper Cables- Batteries die, such is a fact of life. However, unlike when your iPhone dies, a dead car battery is going to set you back a lot more than a couple of hours without access to your Facebook app. Don't be a fool, always carry a set of jumper cables in your car so the next good Samaritan that comes along can give you a jump and get you on your way to the nearest auto store. You could even be that good Samaritan if you see someone having car troubles!

Good luck, and be sure to help out others on the side of the road if you ever see someone in need!

Solving The Traffic Problem

We've all been there -- you've been sitting in stop-and-go traffic for the past 45 minutes. Your right ankle has gotten quite the workout between all the transition from the gas pedal to the brake, and doubly so if you drive a manual transmission car. You're so bored and frustrated and all you'd like to do is focus your eyes on something other than the bumper stickers on the car in front of you that you've already read five times over. Well I've got good news for you: these very well could soon be problems of the past.

The self-driving car is an idea that has been around likely since right around the time car ownership became the norm, but only recently has it garnered serious attention as viable technology. With many of the major auto manufacturers devoting a lot of time, effort, and money into exploring and developing this technology, some are expecting that we may have tested, reliable autonomous driving available for public use by as soon as 2015. Other experts believe that no only will this technology provide a much more luxurious driving experience, but that it will also help to drastically reduce the risk of automotive accidents due to texting or other distractions.

Nissan has just received the permits and plates to begin public testing of a semi-autonomous vehicle in Japan, as well as many other manufacturers, so while it may be speculative as to when such technology is implemented safely at the public level, experts are fairly certain that it is undoubtedly on it's way.

What do you think about these technologies? Smart? Safe? Or too dangerous? Let us know below in our comments section.

Auto Tip: Checking Your Tire Tread

Not sure if it's time yet to get new tires or not? Here is a quick and reliable way to test the condition of your tires:

Take a penny and place the penny in the tread of your tires. If the tread depth isn't deep enough to at least touch Lincoln's head, then it is time to grab a new tire! Be sure to test this on each tire individually as tires can sometimes tend to wear unevenly.

If you find you do need some new tires or any other type of maintenance work done check out our service specials here.

It Can Wait: Texting and Driving

With text messaging quickly becoming the go-to, convenient, and preferred medium of casual, everyday conversation, it goes without saying that we find ourselves frequently distracted by what's happening on the screen of our phone. Depending on what situation you are in, this has varying levels of acceptability. On a crowded bus or train making the commute to or from work? Go ahead, have at 'er. On your way walking somewhere? Alright, just make sure to keep your eyes up occasionally to keep from running into anything or anyone. Out to lunch with a friend or on a date? Do so at your own risk, just don't expect it to be received well.

But there is one situation where texting is never okay; when you're driving. All it takes is a split second of distraction from your phone that can lead to you not seeing that red light or person stopped ahead of you. Research shows that one quarter of all automotive accidents result from cell phones. So whether it is legally mandated or merely just frowned upon in your state to use your cellphone while operating a vehicle, please do the responsible thing and save it for when you have arrived at your destination -- it can wait.

For more information and statistics on the impact of texting and driving and to make a pledge to not text and drive please visit: http://www.itcanwait.com/

How Is Your Climate Affecting Your Battery?

It's summer, which for most means BBQs, swimming pools, frozen treats, and other activities that involve both enjoying the outdoors while also staying cool. But did you know that your car's battery is not much different? Whereas you can take a refreshing dip in a swimming pool or find a nice place with some AC, your car and it's power source can hardly afford the same luxury (we don't recommend trying to cool your car off in a pool).

What can you do about it? While the obvious answer is clearly to keep your vehicle out of direct sunlight and parked in shade and cool areas as often as possible, there are other ways of being proactive, like being familiar with the life expectancy of your battery and knowing how the heat can affect it and when to replace it.

Check out the graphic below to figure out the life expectancy of your car's battery and be sure to stop in with our dealership if you feel you might be needing a new battery soon, because nothing is worse than being stuck out in the heat wit ha dead battery! http://www.sheehyspringfieldvw.com/

VW confirms Golf GTD diesel coming to US for 2016

Part of the Volkswagen Golf recipe that has helped the car sell more than 30 million units in just under 40 years is the number of variants in which the hatchback is offered. Building on that range here in the US, Automotive News is reporting that we will finally be getting the sporty Golf GTD, likely as a 2016 model. It's the GTD, you'll recall, that crosses the performance abilities of the venerable GTI with a powerful and fuel-efficient diesel engine.

After speaking with Andreas Valbuena, Volkswagen product manager for the Golf, AN not only says that the GTD will for sale in the US in a couple years, it also estimates a baseline price of around $27,000, which would place it between the current pricing for the GTI and the Golf R. The GTD is launching in Europe this summer, but we won't be getting the seventh-generation Golf in the US for another year. The news about the performance diesel model isn't entirely unexpected – VW officials have been hinting at it for at least a year now, going so far as to import a sixth-generation model for media test drives on US soil, a task we happily took them up on last year.

The Mk VII GTD uses VW's 2.0-liter TDI engine with output increased to 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, allowing the car to sprint to 60 miles per hour in about seven seconds while returning more than 40 mpg in highway driving. We can't wait.

Maintenance Monday: Conserve Your Gas

Fill up with a lower-octane gasoline. Buy the lowest grade or octane of gasoline that is appropriate for your car. Unless your car requires premium gasoline, filling up your car with high-octane fuel is a waste of money. That pricey premium fuel won't boost your car's fuel economy or performance in the least, so skip it.

If you're not sure what grade of fuel works best for your car, open up your owner's manual and take a look. As long as your engine doesn't knock or ping when you fuel up with regular unleaded, you're good to drive on this much cheaper gas. Passing on pricey premium gasoline could save you hundreds of dollars a year.

Don't top off. Don't bother topping off when filling your car's gas tank. Any additional gas is just going to slop around or seep out. Why waste your money paying for gas your car won't use? Stop pumping at the first indication that your tank is full when the automatic nozzle clicks off.

Tighten up that gas cap. Gas will evaporate from your car's gas tank if it has an escape. Loose, missing or damaged gas caps cause 147 million gallons of gas to evaporate each year, according to the Car Care Council. So be sure to tighten up that gas cap each time you fuel up your car.

Go for the shade. The hot summer sun that makes the inside of your car feel like a sauna also zaps fuel from your gas tank.

"If you let your car bake in the sun there's going to be a greater amount of evaporative emissions that take place than if you park in the shade," says Jim Kliesch, research associate at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy and vehicle analyst for GreenerCars.com.

So park your car in the shade of a building or tree whenever possible. And buy a good windshield shade. A windshield shade blocks sunlight and helps to keep heat out of the inside of your car.

Use your garage for your car. Got a garage? Clear it out and make room for your car. Parking in your garage will help your car stay warm in winter and cool in summer, and you won't have to depend as much on your gas-guzzling air-conditioning or defroster when you drive.

Pump up your tires. Don't get caught driving on underinflated tires. Underinflated tires wear down more quickly and they also lower your car's gas mileage.

"Tires that have low pressure offer more resistance so the engine is going to work harder to keep the car at 60," says Brian Moody, road test editor at Edmunds.com.

Your car's gas mileage may plummet by as much as 15 percent. Driving on underinflated tires may also reduce the life of your tires by 15 percent or more.

Check your tire pressure once a month. Buy a digital gauge and keep it in your glove box. Compare the pressure in your tires with the recommended pressure listed in your owner's manual and on the placard in your car door. Then inflate your tires as needed. Be sure to check tire pressure when your tires are cold. A good time is early in the morning after your car's been idle overnight.

Keep your engine in tune. Fixing a car that is out of tune or has failed an emissions test can boost gas mileage by about 4 percent. So be sure to give your car regular tune-ups. You'll also want to watch out for worn spark plugs. A misfiring spark plug can reduce a car's fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent.

Replace air filters. Keep a close eye on your engine's air filter. When the engine air filter clogs with dirt, dust and bugs, it causes your engine to work harder and your car becomes less fuel-efficient. Replacing a clogged air filter could improve your gas mileage by as much as 10 percent and save you 15 cents a gallon. It's a good idea to have your engine air filter checked at each oil change. The Car Care Council recommends changing your car's air and oil filters every three months or 3,000 miles or as specified in your owner's manual.

Use the right oil. You can improve your car's gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent by using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. Opt for motor oil with the words "energy conserving" on the API performance label. This oil contains friction-reducing additives.

Don't skimp on maintenance. Be serious about auto care. Your car's performance depends on it.
"Always follow the manufacturer-recommended maintenance," Moody says. "The car's designed to run a certain way. If you neglect it, it won't be as efficient."

VW Up Buggy may be headed to showrooms

Volkswagen showed six conceptual takes on its Up at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, one of those being the Up Buggy. Although few will probably remember it, VW has not forgotten it, applying for a patent for the Meyers Manx revival roadster way back in March 2012 and being approved in June of this year, according to a report in Autocar. That will give the automaker a 14-year lock on the design while it decides whether to move forward with a reboot of its past.

A patent doesn't mean the Up Buggy will ever move beyond the sheet-of-paper stage, but Autocar says VW is studying the market to see if a production version is feasible. We can't see North America ever getting it, but even so, we wouldn't complain if they made it - especially if they put an exposed engine in back that was set off by 18-inch-long twin tailpipes jutting straight up into the air. However, for a company that aims to be the world's number-one automaker by 2018, a niche vehicle for its mass-market brand would be a surprising use of resources.

Avoiding Summer Breakdowns

The record-setting heat seen across the country can put extra stress on your car -- especially if it has a lot of miles on it. You'll notice an increased number of cars on the side of the road, particularly on these really hot days.

There are some simple preventative maintenance steps you can take to avoid walking instead of driving this summer.

Tires: Think about walking across the blacktop parking lot barefoot on a hot summer day -- that is what your tires experience during summer months. In addition, the heat is multiplied by the friction caused by the weight of your car. Heat pushes the materials your tires are made of to their limit, causing blowouts and flat tires. Make sure a reputable mechanic looks at your tires at least every 3,000 miles. Also, in between, make sure you keep your tires inflated to the manufacturer's specification, which is found in the vehicle's owner's manual. This will not only prolong tire life but help reduce fuel consumption.

Belts: Another wearable item that is put under extra stress in the summer months is the serpentine belt, sometimes called the fan belt. The added under the hood heat and the use of air conditioning weakens it, and if broken it immobilizes your car. For less than half of the price of a tow-truck ride home, you can buy a new serpentine belt and have it installed.

Cooling system: Oil changes are followed pretty regularly by most owners. However, an often overlooked fluid change is your cooling system fluid, or coolant. While this fluid lasts thousands of miles, and many manufactures call their coolant “100,000 mile” fluid, it should not be neglected. Have your dealer or mechanic test your fluid to ensure that it is up to snuff. Also, if your car does not have the high-mileage fluid in it, having it flushed and changed every two years is a good rule of thumb.

Air conditioning: While this system won't always leave you stranded when it fails (though it can), living without A/C on a hot day isn't fun. There is a lubricant in the system that can break down over time, and it should be conditioned every three years or as needed.

Volkswagen Breaks Guinness World Record!

Volkswagen of America announced today that it has set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® achievement for the “lowest fuel consumption—48 U.S. states for a non-hybrid car” category with a stellar 77.99 mpg — more than 10 mpg better than the previous mark of 67.9 mpg. The achievement also beats the hybrid vehicle record of 64.6 mpg by more than 13 mpg.

The Passat TDI Clean Diesel departed from Volkswagen of America’s headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, on Friday, June 7th, at 12:00 pm and arrived back on June 24th, having covered 8122 miles and visited all 48 states. The car, along with drivers Wayne Gerdes and Bob Winger, were greeted in Herndon by Volkswagen employees as well as Virginia State Delegates Tom Rust and Jim LeMunyon.

Delegate Tom Rust said: "Breaking a world record is a huge accomplishment, and I'm especially pleased that Volkswagen of America—a Herndon, Virginia-based company—is doing its part to make its products more environmentally compatible and less dependent on foreign oil by using cutting-edge diesel technology. Congratulations!"

Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., said: “To cover 8122 miles on just 104.94 gallons of fuel is nothing short of astonishing and shows just how economical our TDI Clean Diesel vehicles can be. Even for everyday drivers, the mileage benefits of our TDI engines are significant: Volkswagen has no fewer than six TDI Clean Diesel models that achieve an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 40 mpg or better on the highway.”

Wayne Gerdes, founder of cleanmpg.com was the primary driver. Automotive journalist Gerdes has made a career out of hypermiling and has set mileage records in more than 100 vehicles, as well as achieving the record for lowest fuel consumption in the lower 48 U.S. states with a hybrid vehicle at 64.6 mpg. His co-driver was Bob Winger, an electronics engineer long involved in energy and conservation projects.

“We felt we had a good chance of beating the existing record with the Passat TDI,” Gerdes said, “but to smash it by averaging 77.99 mpg is really impressive and a testament to the potential of Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel vehicles. Obviously, we employ some specialized techniques to achieve such figures, but there’s no reason why owners of TDI vehicles shouldn’t be able to achieve great mileage with a few simple pointers.” Gerdes suggests:
Plan in advance: look for impediments or topography 15 to 45 seconds ahead, rather than reacting to where you’re currently driving. Use downhill momentum to help crest an uphill section.
Allow the rabbits to win the race to the stoplights. Heavy braking and acceleration consume fuel at a far greater rate than coasting between intersections.
Obey speed limits: The difference in fuel economy between 55 mph and 75 mph can be as much as 30 percent or even higher in some cars.

The 2013 Passat TDI uses Volkswagen’s advanced turbocharged and direct-injection Clean Diesel engine to achieve EPA estimated highway fuel economy of 43 miles per gallon when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission. This enables the Passat TDI to go up to 795 highway miles before needing to refuel.

Clean Diesel engines are just one part of Volkswagen’s approach to sustainable mobility, encapsulated by the Think Blue.® philosophy. Volkswagen employs a wide range of powertrains—diesel, electric, hybrid, and intelligently downsized turbocharged gasoline engines—in its quest to be among the most eco-conscious automakers in the world. That approach extends to the factories in which the cars are built and the processes by which they are made.

For the attempt, the Passat TDI used Shell ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, available at nearly 8,000 Shell stations nationwide, and Continental PureContact® with EcoPlus® Technology tires, which have Tg-F polymers to help reduce rolling resistance and improve fuel efficiency. The record-setting Passat TDI was equipped with a Linear Logic ScanGauge II to precisely measure fuel economy and a Droid® RAZR MAXX™ HD by Motorola® smartphone to provide Guinness World Records tracking requirements and long-lasting connectivity.

2013 Passat TDI Clean Diesel (manual transmission) EPA estimates: 31 city/43 highway mpg. Range based on 43 mpg highway EPA estimate and an 18.5-gallon fuel tank. Actual mileage will vary and depends on several factors including driving habits and vehicle condition.

30 Million VW Golf's Sold!

Volkswagen has officially built 30 million Golf units since the first hatch rolled off the assembly line in early 1974. The company says the accomplishment has cemented the compact's place as the most successful European car ever built, though we imagine the original Beetle might have something to say about that. Even so, Volkswagen says that statistically speaking, the company has sold 2,000 Golf units for every day of production. Chew on that notion for a moment. The Golf has remained relevant over the past four decades thanks to a steady stream of generational updates, and last year, the Volkswagen Golf took the honor of being named the World Car of the Year.

A Golf TDI was the 30 millionth unit produced, and Volkswagen says the machine will be on display at the automaker's Wolfsburg facility. You can read the full press release below for more information, including a generational breakdown of each Golf model.

Could VW XL1 provide blueprint for 190-mph, 70-mpg XR1 sports car?

The Volkswagen XL1 is a next-generation vehicle focused on one thing: hitting the one-liter per 100 kilometer fuel efficiency bogey (hence its name). That ultra-low level of energy usage translates to 235 miles per gallon, but since VW says the two-seater burns even less than a liter per 100 km, the estimated fuel economy number is more like 261 mpg. Even if real-world testing sometimes returns "just" 120 mpg, there's no question that this is a car built for efficiency. So why are we hearing rumors of a sports version called the XR1?

That's what Automobile Magazine claims, after speaking with an anonymous VW board member who said that the idea behind the XR1 would be to offer performance like a Porsche 911 alongside hybrid-like fuel economy at a lower price. Interestingly, the car's electric powertrain would be removed, and the resulting weight drop would allow VW to use cheaper materials (aluminum and steel instead of magnesium and carbon fiber, for example) while still keeping the car light. The liquid-fuel engine might become a four-cylinder (maybe the turbocharged 2.0-liter found in the seventh-generation GTI, which offers 220 horsepower) and a new seven-speed automatic dual-clutch that could together provide 70 miles per gallon.

Automobile notes that a lot of other changes would be needed that would modify the car's look and feel, but if such a vehicle is approved, we could theoretically be looking at a high-efficiency sports car that reaches 62 miles per hour in under 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 190 mph – all for under $50,000. That sure sounds sweet, but when Autoblog Green reached out to Volkswagen of America, the automaker's manager of product and technology, Mark Gillies, said this was all news to him. Isn't speculation fun?

250,000 Passats in just over two years!

It hasn't been without incident or union organizing drive, but the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, TN has built its 250,000 Passat in just a little over two years. The Night Blue Passat TDI with black leather has come just two years and five weeks after the first customer car came off the line on April 18, 2011.

In the last year the plant operated at the 150,000-unit capacity that it was intended for, but the downturn in Passat sales and subsequent worker layoffs mean it will be a challenge to repeat the feat. The plant does have the world's largest solar park, though, and you can't take that away from them.

VW debuts 503-hp Design Vision GTI at Wörthersee

As is the case every year, Volkswagen engineers have built and brought a new toy to their fans at the annual Wörthersee festival in Reifnitz, Austria. Called the Design Vision GTI, this track toy is a Golf that's been widened, lowered and given an injection of twin-turbo V6 steroids.

The powerplant providing motivation is a 3.0-liter V6 paired with two turbochargers to produce 503 horsepower and up to 413 pound-feet of torque. With all-wheel drive and Volkswagen's famous DSG gearbox (the gear count is unknown), the Design Vision GTI can erase what's between you and 62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds, as well as a reach a terminal velocity of 186 mph. Carbon ceramic brakes, 20-inch wheels and a specially tuned chassis round out the hardware upgrades, while engineers compressed the car's dimensions to be shorter, wider and lower than a stock GTI.

The exterior of the Design Vision GTI is meant to evoke the future of GTI styling, which is fine by us as we especially like how the car's iconic C-pillar is pulled away from the body and flows into the significantly flared rear fenders. It looks like the reflection of a GTI in a circus mirror with menace-making bends. The interior, meanwhile, is an exercise in editing, with switches, knobs and all manner of unnecessary controls removed, and the center console more severely oriented towards the driver. The rear seats have been replaced by an X-shaped crossbar, and red straps appear where door handles used to be (à la Porsche). There's even a camera embedded in the A-pillar that can shoot either the track ahead or the driver at work.

While not as stout in the power or performance departments as the 2007 GTI W12 Concept, the Design Vision GTI looks even more the business than that King of Golfs. For now we only have renderings, but we'll update this post with live images of the Design Vision GTI as soon as they're available.

VW Reveals New Pick-Up Model: the Volkswagen Amarok R-Style

Volkswagen has announced another vehicle that will be delighting the brand's fans at this week's Wörthersee festival in Austria. The Amarok R-Style is a performance version of the pickup that VW seemingly sells all over the world... except the US and Canada, of course.

The truck is powered by a 3.0-liter TDI V6 making 272 horsepower and a stout 442 pound-feet of torque. That engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic, and the pair are reportedly good for helping the truck reach 62 miles per hour in 7.9 seconds. While a 20-year-old GMC Cyclone pickup would laugh that figure off as cute, the Amarok R-Style at least looks the part of a performance truck with 22-inch wheels bursting out of fenders widened by 2.36 inches on either side. There's also a carbon fiber diffuser out back, side sill extensions and bigger air intakes up front. Oh, and two chromed tailpipes for good measure.

Inside, the Amarok R-Style apes the GTI with a black, white and red color scheme on its surfaces and deeply bolstered sport seats. A new steering wheel, eight-inch touchscreen, subwoofer and carbon fiber dashboard round out the other extra upgrades.

Possible Volkswagen Roadster Model?

Despite the on-again, off-again rumors surrounding a small Volkswagen roadster, it would appear that a small droptop two-seater is still on track. CarScoops, citing a report in Germany's Auto Motor und Sport magazine, states that there are many people within Volkswagen who still believe that this sort of vehicle would be good for the brand.

"I'm not the only one in our company who is convinced that a small roadster wouldn't be the worst thing for Volkswagen," the automaker's design chief, Walter de Silva, told AMS, according to CarScoops. "This is a vehicle that we particularly like, and we always have in mind."

Volkswagen showed the BlueSport concept (pictured above) at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, but the project was quickly put on hold, with earlier reports stating that there simply wasn't a business case for the car. Those reports were contradicted early last year, and it's good to hear that spokespeople within the company are still looking to move forward with the project.

The BlueSport concept debuted with a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, good for 177 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. According to Volkswagen, the BlueSport would hit 62 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 140 mph, and able to hit fuel economy numbers as high as 54.7 miles per gallon. Of course, a small turbocharged gasoline engine could also work in this application, and CarScoops states that this sort of vehicle could also find homes within the Audi and Porsche brands, as well.

Volkswagen Introduces R-Line for the All-New Golf

Volkswagen has rolled out three new R-Line packages for the Golf, comprising exterior and interior kits along with a Sport Pack. Any one of them can be had on the Comfortline or Highline trims, but for different prices. The exterior add-ons include logos, new front and rear bumpers and a rear spoiler, new side sills and a black diffuser. It runs 995 euros ($1,297 US) on the Highline, 1,180 euros ($1,538 US) on the Comfortline.

The interior package includes items like aluminum-look instrument and door panels, new door sills, a black headliner, stainless steel pedal caps and sports seats. It goes for 640 euros on the Highline trim or 945 euros ($1,231 US) on Comfortline. You can add Vienna leather to that, upgrading from cloth, for either 1,755 ($2,287 US) euros on the Highline or 2,115 euros ($2,756 US) on the Comfortline.

Finally, the Sport package gets a new suspension and revised steering, plus tinted windows. It's the most economical of the lot, needing just 430 euros ($560 US) for both Comfortline and Highline.

Volkswagen Announces the all-new Passat Wolfsburg Edition

Volkswagen has just announced a new Passat Wolfsburg Edition, which slots between the base S and mid-grade SE trims in terms of content and price. The automaker has not released any official photos of the car as of this writing (aside from the badge shot you see here, of course), but the Wolfsburg Passat will be visually set apart from the rest by a unique set of 16-inch alloy wheels.

The big host of upgrades for the Wolfsburg Edition are found inside, where buyers will enjoy standard amenities like leatherette seats (with bun-warmers on the front chairs), a power driver's seat, satellite radio and a media interface with iPod connectivity. Of course, this comes on top of the already standard Passat features like Bluetooth and auto on/off headlamps. The Wolfsburg Passat will only be available with the 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Look for the 2013 Wolfsburg Edition Passat to hit dealerships in the very near future, priced from $23,495, *not including $795 for destination.

First Look: 2013 VW Golf R

The launch of a new Volkswagen Golf is never a small thing, and things are already looking up for the subcompact hatchback after it was named 2013 World Car of the Year. While we've already seen the base and GTI versions of the next-generation Golf, now we're getting our first look at the sportier Golf R.

Although this prototype wears GTI lettering on the front fenders, it's more than just the roll cage and Sparco racing seat hinting that this is something a little more serious. Unlike the Golf and GTI, this car shows that the Golf R will continue to flaunt massive air intakes on each side of the fascia, and the rear of the car (though it's hard to see) has quadruple exhaust outlets. We still don't have an official word on power, but rumors indicate that the next Golf R could be pushing close to 300 horsepower, making it the most powerful production Golf ever. As much fun as we had during our first drive of the Golf R Cabriolet in the cold, snowy French Riviera last month, more power is a warming idea.

VW Sells 1.43 Million Vehicles in First Three Months of 2013

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand delivered 1.43 (January – March 2012: 1.36; +5.2 percent) million vehicles in the first three months of the year. There was, however, a slight decline in deliveries for the month of March, with the brand handing over 532,400 (March 2012: 536,700; -0.8 percent) vehicles to customers. “There were mixed developments on markets worldwide for the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. While there was further growth in Asia and North America in particular, deliveries declined in other regions such as Western Europe and South America. As expected, markets are becoming more difficult, and in some cases decidedly more challenging”, Christian Klingler, Board Member for Sales and Marketing for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, said in Wolfsburg on Tuesday.
Volkswagen Passenger Cars delivered 396,300 (441,800; -10.3 percent) vehicles on the overall European market in the first quarter, of which 208,800 (232,600; -10.2 percent) were handed over in Western Europe (excluding Germany). There was also a downward trend in the home market of Germany, where customers took possession of 126,500 (149,000; -15.1 percent) new vehicles. In contrast, Volkswagen Passenger Cars recorded slight growth in Central and Eastern Europe in the period to March, with deliveries running at 61,000 (60,200; +1.4 percent) units. The company handed over 35,300 (35,800; -1.4 percent) vehicles to customers in Russia.
In the Asia-Pacific region the brand grew deliveries by 20.9 percent in the period to March, handing over 653,500 (540,600) units. In China (incl. Hong Kong), 598,100 (483,400; +23.7 percent) vehicles were delivered during the same period. In India, on the other hand, deliveries fell to 16,600 (20,400; -18.5 percent) units. In the North America region, Volkswagen Passenger Cars grew deliveries by 7.3 percent to 145,700 (135,700) units, of which 98,200 (94,400; +4.0 percent) models were handed over to customers in the United States. However, in the South America region there was a 7.3 percent drop in deliveries to 176,600 (190,500) units, of which 131,200 (138,600; -5.3 percent) vehicles were handed over to customers in Brazil.
